Self-portrait #1 1997 graphite pencil on paper
When you draw faces you can sometimes get lost in them...all of them except your own. When I finally broke down and took an art class 1 of the things I learned that was most important was that you always have a ready model to work from...yourself. Problem is that like any other person, when I look at myself I don't see anything good. I only see the imperfections, I only see the flaws. I'd love to be perfect, I'd love to look like a sports hero or a movie star, but I don't, and part of becoming a better artist has actually been getting comfortable in my own skin. I can honestly say 5 years ago I would have never shown anyone this drawing, not because it's not that great, but because it's of me...
