In September of 2001 I started working as a substitute at my old high school and the elementary school in Manasquan. My time at 'Squan' was less than glorious. I was admittedly awkward and a little goofy, and my lovely classmates made it a point to remind me of that every day. When I graduated I left with a very bitter taste, which honestly is still there. As a sub I got to see how the other half lived so to speak. Teachers are the most under rated people in the world. For less than great pay they help kids bring out the tools they need to become successful in life. Some aren't good, but most are. Some are even great. While working I met some great kids too. I had moments that made me reconsider wanting to be a teacher and some that made my decision not to be make even more sense. The moment that made me smile, laugh and even cry a little was when 1 of the kindergartners presented me with the drawing she had worked on in class. It is now on my wall next to 1 of Angie's drawings. Stuff like this makes the lack of money and respect worth the effort to become a teacher...
